Make-A-Wish defends chapter's porn convention proceeds

"The evidence would suggest Make-A-Wish does not consider the devastation pornography brings to families as a viable concern when contributions are at stake." - AFA Chairman Don Wildmon
The Make-A-Wish Foundation is supporting a chapter's decision to accept proceeds raised during the Pittsburgh Comic Convention (PCC), despite learning the event features high profile porn stars and celebrates gothic sex and violence.

According to national Make-A-Wish Foundation president Paula Van Ness, local chapters are free to accept monies from donators without restrictions from her national office. She says she will not dictate how local chapters raise funds.

Judy Stone, president of Make-A-Wish of Western Pennsylvania/Southern West Virginia, says, "The 'All Ages Casino Night' and 'Charity Auction' fundraising events are not part of the convention." Yet, they are heavily promoted on the PCC Website, the Make-A-Wish Website, and are held in the same rooms as other convention events, and on the same day.

Website promotions for this year's PCC on April 25-27 guarantee no shortage of displays of nudity, violence, and sexual fetish fantasy exhibits. "The convention appears to be more of a celebration of pornography, witchcraft, demonology, and the occult, rather than comics," says Don Wildmon, chairman of American Family Association. "Materials displayed at this convention are donated for the purpose of raising money for Make-A-Wish. It puzzles me that Make-A-Wish denies any connection."

Wildmon says Make-A-Wish policies should prohibit chapters from partnering with known pornographic programs. "The evidence suggests Make-A-Wish does not consider the devastation pornography brings to families as a viable concern when contributions are at stake."
