AFA Action Alert!4/28/03 - Colorado Senate turns back on National MottoLegislative Update! Patriotic bill allowing posting of motto in public classrooms killed by state lawmakers.A bill allowing public school teachers to recognize our national heritage by displaying a copy of the national motto "In God We Trust" on classroom walls and other public buildings passed through three legs of the legislative process. The forth and final leg was cut off by duly sworn public servants. Led by 16 Democrats and 4 Republicans, the Colorado Senate stoned the bill to death on a 20-15 vote last week. "I'm very disappointed," said Representative Debbie Stafford, who introduced House Bill 1128. "America needs our lawmakers to support patriotism, especially in wartime. More importantly, our children need to know about our heritage, and how, historically, our nation has become strong because of it." In a Denver Post survey, 57% of respondents said the national motto should be placed in public buildings. According to the Denver Post, Witness Rob Cory, a Pueblo lawyer, testified in favor of the bill because he said the motto sends an important message. "The government itself needs to be reminded that there is something greater than the government," he said. Obviously, most lawmakers didn't agree.
